The total area covers 4136 hectares on four islands: lampedusa, linosa, lantern and Isola dei Coniglic (literally translated: rabbit island), as well as some rock formations. Flora and fauna
Geographically located in the middle of the Mediterranean, the Pelagic Islands are a place where the flora and fauna of the warmer eastern waters and the cooler western waters influenced by the Atlantic currents converge.
The original flora, the maquis (the characteristic Mediterranean vegetation), has disappeared. Today, the most common form of vegetation is the steppe scrubland with daffodil (asteraceae) and the star hyacinth (scilla). The vegetation on the coast is characterized by extensive fields sea lavender (limonium lopadusanum). A jewel is the caralluma europaea, a North African cactus-like plant, found in Europe only on Lampedusa and southern Spain. Also the North African Cornflower (centaurea acaulis) blooms on Lampedusa.
The fauna of Lampedusa is clearly influenced by North Africa. That's how the wrath snake (coluber) for and on Conigli a special lizard (the psammodromus algrius). Nest on the rocks Eleanor's Falcon (falco eleonorae), the barbarine falcon (falco pelegrinoides), the rare crested cormorant (phalacrocorax aristotelis) and the yellow-legged gull (larus michahellis). Insects come in great variety, such as a large grasshopper without wings (the pamphagus ortolaniae), and the beetle (julodis onopordi). The sea turtle lays on the beach of Conigli caretta caretta her eggs in early summer. Unfortunately, tourism poses a serious threat to the survival of this animal.
