SARS-CoV-2 without background.pngWARNING: Due to the outbreak of the contagious disease COVID-19 (see coronavirus pandemic), caused by the virus SARS-CoV-2, also known as coronavirus, there are travel restrictions worldwide. It is therefore of great importance to follow the advice of the official bodies of Belgium and Netherlands to be consulted frequently. These travel restrictions may include travel restrictions, closure of hotels and restaurants, quarantine measures, being allowed to be on the street for no reason and more, and can be implemented with immediate effect. Of course, in your own interest and that of others, you must immediately and strictly follow government instructions.
overview Italian speaking areas in the world

Italian is the official language of Italy, by San Marino, the Vatican CITY and the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. It is also spoken locally in Croatia (Istria), in Slovenia (Piran, Izola and Koper). It is also spoken in Malta (it was the official language until 1934, today 66% of Maltesers speak it) in Albania, the United States (about 1 million), in Canada (especially in Montreal) in South America (Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay), in Ethiopia, in Eritrea, in Libya (it is the commercial language with English) and in Somalia (academic language until 1991).

French, English and German are spoken in most tourist places in Italy.

Grammar

In Italian, you use the polite form ("lei") with all the people you don't know; regardless of whether they are older or younger than you. You will use the confidential form ("you") with people you know. The two forms differ in usage of second and third person verbs.

Pronunciation

vowels

The "u" is pronounced "oe". The other vowels are roughly as in Dutch. The "a" can be pronounced like the "aa" in "late" and as "a" in "lat". Also the "o" knows "oo" as in "boot" and "o" as in "bot". The "e" has 3 pronunciations: the "ee" as in "hot", the "e" as in "het" and the "e" as in "the", the latter sounding like the "u" in "hut ". The coffee variety "cafè latte" is pronounced "ka-fe la-tu" and not, like many English speakers, pronounce it as "la-tee" (and don't just order latte because then you get a glass of milk).

consonants

The "c" is pronounced like "k" before an "a", "o" and "u". Before an "e" and an "i" it becomes "ch" (example: "certo" is pronounced "chertoo"). The "h" is written, but not pronounced.
