Libya is a North African country, located between Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Niger, Chad and Sudan. To the north it is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea. Libya is a former Italian colony. After a two-year transition period, the independent United Kingdom of Libya was founded on December 24, 1951, with Idris I as king. In 1969 Colonel Gaddafi staged a coup and under his leadership the country followed a quirky course. It was not until the end of his reign that Libya began to adopt a more open course, also in terms of tourism. Since the civil war in 2011, this process has again been slowed down by the unsafe situation in the country. The civil war, which began as an uprising against the regime, also brought the end of the long dictatorship under Gaddafi. Currently, the National Transitional Council has taken control of the entire territory and the new head of state is Mustafa Abud al-Jeleil.

The country can be divided into a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters and a desert climate with extremely hot temperatures in the summer, with very low temperatures at night. In winter it can freeze at night. Taking this into account, the best period to visit Libya is in April, May, October and November.
After independence in late 1951, Libya was a monarchy under King Idris. He was ousted by a military coup in 1969 that brought Gaddafi to power. The country became internationally isolated, especially after Libya's involvement in several terrorist attacks. It changed its policy by announcing to fight al-Qaida in 1999.
It is now more open to tourism, but the tourist infrastructure is still quite rudimentary. Compared to Egypt and Morocco, the country is much more authentic.
