Sciacca is a city of Sicily.

To know

Sciacca is a very popular tourist destination and the tourist potentials are very varied.

In the historic center there are still some 16th century bastions and three gates still almost completely intact.

Ancient and evocative traditions still permeate the social fabric of the town today; as evidence of this are the majestic and centenary Carnival (whose floats are built in papier mache), the pilgrimage to the Basilica of San Calogero, the procession of the Madonna del Soccorso (matron of the city and linked since the seventeenth century to the seaside town) and the feast dedicated to St. Peter to whom the port quay and the church overlooking it are also dedicated.

Characteristic are also the presence of thermal baths, sulphurous waters and steam caves that enrich the town and have resulted in an attempt via referendum to name the town in "Sciacca Terme".

When to go

It is advisable to visit Sciacca in the summer season, as the town is widely equipped along its coast with rocky and sandy beaches or in the carnival period, in fact Sciacca receives more attraction in its centenary Carnival characterized by medium-sized floats built in papier-mâché, colored, often on backgrounds that portray its seas and its ceramics and enriched by kinetic details and luminous games.

Background

Inhabited in prehistoric times by the Sicans and later by the Romans (who already learned of the thermal riches), Sciacca was known by the invasion of various populations, especially Arabs and Normans who contributed to the growth of the town.

In the 16th century, at the same time as the construction of churches and monasteries, the city was disputed for about 70 years between two noble families, the Luna and the Perollo. This historical event is known as "The case of Sciacca".

Bus 1 connects Porta Palermo to the Salita del Monte San Calogero, bus 2 connects the terminus to the San Michele district and the Stadium located at the entrance to the Perriera , bus 3 goes further into Perriera and then extends towards the seaside areas of Contrada Foggia and San Marco, bus 4 (active only in the winter season) and the "substitute" bus 5 run through the historic center.

The same company then assists the transport of school shuttles purely in the morning and shuttles for the Carnival that starts from Perriera (the parking is located in front of the alternative Giuffrè stadium) and then stops first in C.da Stazzone and then in the center, parallel to the central square Angelo Scandaliato.

More info on the routes and timetables are available on the company's website or at the telephone number 39 0925 21154.
