Naro is located approximately in the middle of the city triangle Agrigento, Licata and Canicatti in the southeast of the province of Agrigento. The city has 8,332 inhabitants and covers an area of ​​207.33 km². On the territory of the town flows the river naro. It is located on the top of a hill (596 m). If you are interested in medieval architecture, a visit to Naro is worthwhile. Since there are virtually no accommodation options, it is best to visit the city during a round trip or from an accommodation in the area.

Naro borders the following municipalities: Agrigento, Caltanissetta, Camastra, Campobello di Licata, canicatti, Castrofilippo, Delia (CL), Favara, licata, Palma di Montechiaro, Ravanusa and Sommantino (CL).

History

Naro was probably founded during the Greek period. Like the entire surrounding area, it is then Romans, Arabs and Normans predominates. Under Frederick II it became a crown city. In the 1600s and 1700s, it experienced its heyday as witnessed by many religious and secular buildings of the time. Unfortunately, today many of those buildings are in poor condition.

There are no highways leading to Naro. The main roads leading there are generally good to drive on. Naro is from canicatti to reach over the SS410, and from Agrigento or licata about the SS115 and then at Palma di Montechiaro over the SS410.

The Chiaramonte . Castle
  •    Castello di ChiaramonteLargo Castello. The castle towers at an altitude of 600 m above the town. It was built in the twelfth century on the ruins of an earlier Arab fortress. In 1330, the castle was restored by Frederick III of Aragon, who had a keep added: a square tower in which he lived during his stay. The western side of the tower bears a coat of arms of the Aragon family. The eastern side has two Gothic windows showing the large Sala del Principe illuminated on the first floor of the tower. In 1336, during the reign of Matthew Chiaramonte, further changes were made, such as the bastions in the main courtyard for housing the garrison. The local farmers also found a safe haven here during danger. The castle covers an area of ​​1460 square meters and has a perimeter of 166 meters.
Palazzo San Francesco
  • Via Dante. This street runs through the entire village from east to west and is framed by beautiful baroque buildings. On the Cavour square is the Church of the Saviour with its beautiful facade, and, a few tens of meters away, on Via Cannizzaro, de Church of Santa Caterina, built in 1366, renovated in the 18th century and subsequently restored to its original state. The simple interior is enriched with an Arc de Triomphe in the Chiaramonte style. The Chiesa Madre, built by Jesuit Fathers in the 17th century, contains numerous works of art from the old Mother Church. To the left of the entrance is a beautiful baptismal font from 1424 Palazzo Nicolò di Baric has a beautiful facade of tuff in Sicilian Baroque style.   • Santuario di San Calogero. The Santuario di San Calogero is located at the end of Corso Umberto I, the eastern continuation of Via Dante. A panoramic balcony at the front of the church offers great views over the Paradiso Valley. The church was built in the 16th century and extensively renovated in the Baroque era. On the altar is a statue of the Black Saint, which is carried around in procession on June 18.
  •    Duomo Normanno. The Norman cathedral stands next to the castle and was built at the end of the 11th century by Roger de Hauteville on the site of a mosque. The old cathedral can be reached from Via Dante Alighieri by a steep staircase of 209 steps. In 1771 the cathedral underwent a restoration in which the Baroque elements were added. In 1867 worship services were stopped due to danger of collapse. Inside, you can still see the arches of the nave supported by Corinthian columns.
  • Porta d'Oro. The Golden Gate is the only gate of the original six medieval gates that has survived.
