History

Catania from the air with Mount Etna in the background

Catania is in 729 BC. founded by Chalsis and has a long history. Under the Aragonese dynasty it was once the capital of the Kingdom of Sicily. In the course of its history, it has been repeatedly hit by volcanic eruptions (the most impressive, historically, is that of 1669) and earthquakes (the most catastrophic occurred in 1169 and 1693 respectively).

In the 8th century BC. Catania was founded by Greek settlers from Chalkida. The city developed into the main port of Sicily under Roman rule. Catania was sacked by vandals led by Geiserik in the years 440-441. After the city was ruled by the Ostrogoths for a period, it was recaptured by the Eastern Roman Empire in 535. Catania became the seat of the Byzantine Governor of SicilyAfter Aghlabid Muslims landed in Sicily in 827, they waged a long war to conquer it from the Byzantines. The city would belong to the Islamic Emirate of Sicily until 1071, the year the Normans conquered the city. After the Norman conquest of the city, it was ruled by bishops. In the years 1194-1197 the city was sacked by German soldiers during and after the conquest of the island by Emperor Henry VI. In 1232 the city revolted against Hendrik's son Frederick IIFrederick II later built a large castle in Catania and resided in the city to end the dominance of the bishops. Catania was one of the main centers of the Sicilian Vespers, a revolt against the House Anjou-Sicily in 1282. After the revolt, Sicily became part of the Kingdom of Aragon. In the 14th century, Catania gained importance as the city was elected as the seat of parliament and the royal seat of the island. In 1669, parts of the city were covered under lava after an eruption of Mount Etna. The earthquake (terramoto) of 1693 largely destroyed the city. In the following decades, the city was led by Giovanni Battista Vaccarini, rebuilt in the architectural style of the Sicilian baroque, which is still very characteristic of the city center today. Since many buildings were rebuilt with black lava stones, the city is also known as Black daughter of Etna. In 1860 the troops of Giuseppe Garibaldic Sicilyfor the Kingdom of Sardinia in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Since 1861, Catania has been part of the united Italy. During the WWII Catania was repeatedly bombed by the Allies. From June 5, 1940, about 100,000 inhabitants of Catania were evacuated to the surrounding villages. The German troops left the city on August 5, 1943. After the war, Catania, like other southern Italian cities, had to deal with the mafia and economic disadvantage with the wealthier cities of northern Italy.

Safety

Who says Sicily, says mafia. But what does a holidaymaker have to fear? The tourist has nothing to fear from the current working method of the mafia. He should be more concerned with everyday petty crime such as bag theft and pickpocketing. In this, however, Sicily is not unique. This occurs in all holiday countries. Also about the infamous blood feud (omerta) you don't have to worry. In summary: Sicily is a safe holiday destination!

Travel Warning

WARNING: Car theft is slightly more common in Sicily than in other southern destinations. At the beach and the big cities Palermo and Catania it is necessary to observe a few important precautions. Never leave valuables in your car. Leave the glove box open so as not to give the impression that it contains valuables. When walking through the city, handbags are a popular object for scipatory (purse thieves) who want to outsmart you with a moped.
