Ragusa is the capital of the homonymous province in the southeast of the island Sicily.

background

The city of Ragusa consists of two fundamentally different districts.
To the east, on a hilltop surrounded by a ravine, is the old part of town Ragusa Ibla. After the devastating earthquake of 1693, this part of the city also had to be largely rebuilt, but the medieval structure with the winding alleys and stairs remained.
The district that was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693 Ragusa "supra" (or Ragusa superiore) was built according to the criteria of baroque town planning in a chessboard-like pattern with wide streets and squares.

In 1838, asphalt deposits were discovered in the Ragusa region and this asphalt soon became an export item; today, oil and natural gas are extracted. Agriculture remains one of the most important branches of the economy, especially dairy farming and cheese production, but also viticulture.

history

The history of the settlement goes back to the Neolithic Age, later a Siculian settlement arose in the area, which was named in honor of the goddess Hera Hybla Heraia wore. The tyrants of Gela and Agrigento tried at 491 resp. 450 BC in vain to take the city, which was always on good terms with Kamarina. This is how the city got the name Hibla audax, "the daring one". In the 3rd century B.C. Ragusa came under Roman rule together with Modica.

Those who follow in rule Byzantines surrounded the city around 700 AD. with a wall ring; she could also feel after the fall of Modica to the Arabs for a few more decades until Ragusa fell to the Arabs in 867.

Under the Normans Ragusa was raised to a county in 1090 and the rights were confirmed under Frederick II. As part of the Sicilian Vespers, the lords of Anjou, from whom Ragusa and Modica had to suffer, were driven out and the cities fell to the House of Aragon. January 11th 1693 was Southeast Sicily from a formidable earthquake destroyed, the city was largely rebuilt like many in the area in the style of the Sicilian Baroque.

By 1848 Ragusa, Modica and Scicli had already rebelled against the Burbon rule; It was only with the March of the Thousand under Garibaldi that the Burbon rule in Sicily was ended in 1860 and the island was united with the Kingdom of Italy.
After socialist ideas had spread in Ragusa, it became the focus of fascist politics and, in this context, made it the provincial capital in 1927.
