History
In 1960, Cyprus became an independent state after being under British rule. In 1974, the Turks invaded the northern part of the island, and the occupation continued unabated, leading to strained relations between Turks and Greeks.
The locals
85% of the inhabitants are Greek Cypriots and 12% are Turkish Cypriots. There are also a minority of Armenians and Maronites in the country.

The capital of Cyprus is Nicosia, also known as Lefkosia (Turkish). It is located by the Pedieos watercourse in the middle of the island. Just over 200,000 people live here and the city is divided into a Greek Cypriot and a Turkish Cypriot part. The city houses a variety of historical sites and museums.
Getting to Cyprus
Flights are the way to get to Cyprus. There are direct charter flights from Sweden.
There is a ferry line from Turkey to Northern Cyprus. Boats from Greece run more sporadically and take about 12 hours from Rhodes and 24 hours from Athens.
