Balearic Islands or Balearic Islands (Catalan: Balearic Islands, Spanish: Balearic Islands) is an archipelago and autonomous community in Spain.
Islands
The Balearic Islands are, from the largest to the smallest (several islets with an area <5 km² are not shown in this list):
- Majorca (Catalan and Spanish Mallorca), c. 3600 km² and more than 800mil inhabitants;
- Menorca (Catalan and Spanish Menorca), c. 700 km² and approx. 90 thousand inhabitants;
- Ibiza (Catalan Ibiza, Spanish Ibiza), c. 600 km² and approx. 110 thousand inhabitants;
- Formentero (Catalan and Spanish Formentera), c. 80 km² and approx. 7500 inhabitants;
- Cabrera (elp. Goat), c. 11 km², without inhabitants (national park).
Ibiza and Formentera are far from the rest of the islands and were formerly considered a separate archipelago, called Pitiusos (= rich in pines, in Greek).
Cities
- Palma, capital of all the Balearic Islands and Majorca;
- Brick (in Catalan) or Mahón (Spanish), capital of Menorca;
- Ibiza (in Catalan) or Ibiza (Spanish), capital of the island of the same name (Ibiza).
