The Shipka Pass is located south of Gabrovo at an altitude of 1,300 meters and is the most important pass in the Balkan Mountains. In the Russo-Turkish War of 1877, Russian and Bulgarian troops defended the pass against the Turks here. Today the great war memorial on the Stoletov summit to the battle.
