Ballstad is a fishing village on the Lofoten-Island Vestvågøy
background
In the south of the island Vestvågøy lies the district Ballstadlandet, another part is not far from it on the island Ballstadøya. In between is the port, it is divided into Hattvika, suitable for smaller boats, and in the well-protected harbor Kræmmervika. Fishing still plays an important role in Ballstad today. There are still numerous typical triangular wooden racks along the coast, where dried fish is produced from February to May.

accommodation
- Rorbu(Plural: rorbuer) one calls the numerous typical fishermen's huts. Originally there were small red wooden houses, about 4m x 4m, in which the fishermen stayed during the fishing season. Its bright red color was once obtained from oil, it was the cheapest color for fishermen. The traditional rorbus have largely disappeared; they are now replaced by new, more comfortable huts, and they are seasonally inhabited by tourists. In Ballstad it is still today Cod liver oil Obtained from the liver of fish.
- Sjøhus, Fishermen's houses, also boat houses. They are mostly small two-story wooden houses. Originally these houses were the family accommodation. Many of the traditional houses have now been remodeled and are rented out as holiday homes.
