With over 900 inhabitants, Barentsburg is the second place on Spitsbergen (after the capital longyearbyen). The name Barentsburg is due to the Dutch explorer Willem Barentsz. Barentsburg is a Russian mining town, where the Russians have been mining since 1932. There is a coal mine near the town, where a significant part of the inhabitants also work.

There is only one hotel in Barentsburg, which, unsurprisingly, also bears the name of the settlement.
