After the French Revolution, the independent political institutions were dissolved and the Basque Country was incorporated into the political hierarchy of today's department Pyrénées-Atlantiques incorporated. More recent history has known the creation of the Basque Country Development Council in 1994 and the Basque Country Elected Council in 1994. Since January 1997, the Basque Country has been recognized by a prefectural decree as a country (pays; denotes an area characterized by geographical, economic, cultural or social cohesion).

The Bertaram Grotto is the largest in the area. The tour lasts about 2 hours. You take the ship a short distance and then take a little train back outside at the end. It is recommended if you can speak Spanish, Italian or French. The other languages are either spoken poorly or not at all. Entry costs € 13 per person. Not cheap but worth it.
