Urban centers

  • Beja - Capital of the Lower Alentejo, Beja has a remarkable artistic heritage comparable to that of Èvora but it is much less popular.
  • Alvito - A pretty village of 2,500 inhabitants, a fiefdom of the da Silveira barons who endowed it with Manueline-style palaces. The baronial castle is now a luxury hotel.
  • Moura - Town with a neighborhood inhabited by the Moors (Mouraria) until 1496.
  • Mértola - Known as Myrtilis in Roman times, Mértola is a village of white houses dominated by a medieval castle.
  • Serpa - Medieval village amidst extensive vineyards formerly the capital of the Roman province of southern Lusitania (Pacensis).
