background

The European settlement of the region has its origins in an extensive land purchase that the Holland Land Company carried out here in 1792. The region was then called "The Holland Purchase". The settlement was named "Batavia" based on the poetic name of the Netherlands.

In 1801, Joseph Ellicot, an agent for the Holland Land Company, set up an office in Batavia, and the following year the territory of the Holland Purchese the new name "Genesee County". When the Holland Land Company was dissolved in 1846, the land was sold.

After the construction of the Erie Canal (1825), Batavia's rise to an industrial city began, mainly producing agricultural equipment and shoes. In the early 20th century, the place experienced a heavy influx of Polish and Italian immigrants.

In 1915, Batavia was formally declared a city. As an industrial location, it has long since lost its importance.
