The Battlefields are surrounded by the provinces Free State in the northwest and Mpumalanga in the north as well as from the districts Zululand in the East, Midlands in the south and the Drakensberg in the southwest.

This South African region was arguably the most soaked in blood. The Zulus met the Boers; of the numerous battles between these two groups, only the one should be mentioned here Battle of the Blood River, it took place on December 16, 1838 and ended with a crushing defeat for the Zulus December 16 her feast day as Day of Reconciliation (Day of Atonement). Numerous fights took place in this area between the British and Boers, one of these battlefields is at the nature reserve Spioenkop Nature Reserve, which is visited by most tourists for its wonderful location, its wildlife and the wide range of water sports.
