Bayrampaşa has the distinction of being the first stop for those who come to Istanbul from Anatolia, as it hosts the Great Istanbul Bus Station. However, the district in general consists of people who migrated from Thrace and the Balkans. For example, mostly citizens of Bosniak origin reside in Yıldırım district. Bayrampaşa's old name was Sağmalcılar. The name was changed after the cholera epidemic that occurred in 1970.
