Basel-county - one of the cantons of Switzerland. Its present territory was annexed to Switzerland in 1501, and the canton itself (also known as a semi-canton) was established in 1833, when rural municipalities, resisting the domination of the city of Basel, separated from the canton of Basel. The highest peak of the canton is Hinteri Egg at 1,169 m above sea level.
