  • Ban Sen: covered by dense forest, the island is almost uninhabited and only accessible by ferry boats. What Lan it's from Cai Rong.
  • Cat Ba: It is a national park with numerous caves, and the most popular destination in Ha Long Bay Bay. It can be accessed by local bus and ferry from Lương Yên Bus Station in Hanoi (recommended), or by tourist boat from Halong , or by local bus or ferry from Haiphong (less scenic).
  • What Lan: a historically significant island with the beginning of some tourism infrastructure and some beautiful beaches. Accessible by ferry from Cai Rong or also (supposedly) from Halong City.
  • Van Don: a large island that is well inhabited, rarely visited by tourists and connected by road to the mainland.

To arrive

By bus

From Hanoi, you can take a minibus from Gia Lam Bus Station. Tickets cost 90,000 dong, take approximately 4 hours and the bus picks up passengers along the way. Air conditioning is minimal, so be prepared to sweat in the summer. most tourists will not find this trip pleasant, but it is an authentic Vietnamese experience.

Mass tourist bound for Cat Ba Island

The vast majority of tourists prefer to go through a travel agency. This consists of spending the morning on the bus, which picks up tourists from their hotels or from an agent in central Hanoi, bringing them to Halong, this is an easier alternative although more expensive. If you choose this option, the standards vary considerably: some quite comfortable, or even luxurious, on boats with excellent food and knowledgeable, enthusiastic guides, but most are characterized by long, busy bus rides, boat rides so slow that you could swim faster (to get you to buy more food and drink on board), like brief stops for canoeing, water cave visits and other obscure practices.

By car

You can also hire a private car from Bai Noi airport or from Hanoi city center to Halong Bay.
