Behchokǫ̀ is located at the northwest end of Great Slave Lake in the region bordering the taiga and tundra. It is part of the North Slave administrative region.
The name "Behchokǫ̀" means "Big Knife region", probably an American trader. The community adopted this name in 2005. Prior to that, it was named “Rae-Edzo”, “Rae” recalling John Rae, a Scottish explorer, and Edzo recalling Chief Edzo who made peace with Chief Akaitcho of Yellowknife. Behchokǫ̀ stands on the site of the former Fort Rae trading post which was established in 1850. Since 2005, Behchokǫ̀ has formed a community government, called tłı̨chǫ, with an elected leader.
