Bus / Kinjang / Street

  • Kinjangs from the Malengkeri terminal in Makassar cost IDR 100,000 per person and take around 5-7 hours for the almost 200 kilometers, including stops for lunch or dinner.
  • A private car with a driver from Makassar Airport costs IDR 800,000.

Bira is at the end of a headland. The next transfer point for connections to the north (e.g. to Bone (70,000 IDR in 3.5 hours) and Sengkang (for Rantepao, from Bone 40,000 IDR in 1.5 hours) or Makassar is Bulukumba, just under 1.5 hours by car from Bira (Bemo 25,000 IDR).

Sights and activities

Bira is a beach town.

beaches

All beaches are heavily frequented by weekend tourists from Makassar on weekends, especially Saturday evening and Sunday. If you don't feel like taking selfies with locals, you should avoid the beaches during this time.

The beaches in Bira have a garbage problem. Most of the time, the plastic waste collects compactly in a strip a few meters wide, up to which the tidal waves have penetrated. Little swims in the water. The situation is better where lodging owners tidy up in front of their own door.

  • Pantai Bira. The beach right on the spot. There are a few warungs and shops on a narrow concrete promenade.
Pantain Barat
  • Pantai Barat. The extension of the Pantai Bira in a north-westerly direction. Every few hundred meters there is an accommodation or restaurant that can be reached via steep steps. If the beach is under water at high tide, you can either wade shoulder-high in the water or walk parallel to the beach along Jalan Pengembangan. There is little shade other than rocks.
Pantai Timur
  • Pantai Timur. Extends north of the port and is lined with coconut trees, in the shade of which lies a quieter district of Biras, it is a very poor village with many friendly locals. There is almost no accommodation here. These are almost without exception in Bira or Bara. Unfortunately, the beach is very littered, so swimming is only possible to a limited extent. In addition, the large ferry port is not far away.

Boat building

Boat building on the Pantai Timur
  • At the northern end of the Pantai Timur is a shipyard that builds large wooden ships right on the beach.
  • There are more shipyards in Tanah Beru (~ 20 km).

Snorkeling

  • At Pantai Barat you can snorkel and watch turtles, rays, sharks and clownfish. From the beach you first have to swim 200 meters over seagrass meadows until the clear water begins. This passage is much easier to negotiate at high tide than at low tide, when you can easily touch a sea urchin. Equipment can be rented in Bira without any problems.
  • In Bira, many accommodations and fishermen offer snorkeling trips by boat to the offshore islands (350,000 IDR per boat).

Diving

There are three diving schools in Bira.

kitchen

There are food options on all beaches, cheap street stalls in the center of Bira and near the mosque. In addition, many bungalow complexes and hotels have their own restaurant.

accommodation

Along the main street Jalan Kapong Kolang and parallel to the beach (Jalan Pengembangan) accommodations are close together; There is a lot of construction activity, so that new guesthouses are added every year.

Practical advice

  • Two ATMs (Bank BRI and BNI) are located at the junction of the main road towards the port.
