Birštonas (German: Birsch firs) is a small spa town with 2500 inhabitants in Lithuania. It is the seat of the municipality of the same name.

The salty springs were mentioned as early as the 14th century. The wooden castle was one of the most important constructions of the Grand Duchy beyond the Middle Ages. Birštonas later became known for its mineral water. The spa operation began in the middle of the 19th century. The Lithuanian Red Cross established sanatorium no.1 here during the First World War.

The sights in this small town are within easy walking distance. Minibuses drive from the bus station to the immediate vicinity. Near the city center, a small passenger ferry crosses the Memel onto the peninsula of the closest Memel loop.

  • 4  Waterfront. Long promenade on the Memel(Nemunas).Open: all day.

  • 6  Vytautas mountain (Birštono piliakalnis, Vytauto kalnas, Castle hill). 30 meter high castle hill, to be climbed by stairs. Nice view of the place and the next Memel loop.Open: all day.

The pharmacy is 50 meters east of the tourist information. There are other pharmacies in the IKI and Norfa supermarkets.
