Birštonas (German: Birsch firs) is a small spa town with 2500 inhabitants in Lithuania. It is the seat of the municipality of the same name.
background
The salty springs were mentioned as early as the 14th century. The wooden castle was one of the most important constructions of the Grand Duchy beyond the Middle Ages. Birštonas later became known for its mineral water. The spa operation began in the middle of the 19th century. The Lithuanian Red Cross established sanatorium no.1 here during the First World War.

The 1 Kaunas International Airport
(IATA: KUN) is only used by Ryanair served from various airports in the British Isles and Scandinavia. The Hungarian low-cost line has been flying since autumn 2016 Wizzair of Eindhoven. Birštonas is via the A16 trunk road with the Lithuanian cities Vilnius (Capital) and Marijampolė connected.

The sights in this small town are within easy walking distance. Minibuses drive from the bus station to the immediate vicinity. Near the city center, a small passenger ferry crosses the Memel onto the peninsula of the closest Memel loop.

- 1 Spa gardens (Between the church and the castle hill). Kurpark: wooden sculptures on the church, Kneipp path, Kurhaus, historical drinking halls, Vytautas monument.Open: all day.
- 2 Neo-Gothic parish church (Birštono Šv. Antano Paduviečio bažnyčia, Anthony of Padua Church) (In the center of the city.). Built from 1900 to 1909 in neo-Gothic style.
- 3 Church museum (Birstono sakralinis muziejus) (North of the church). Small museum in a wooden house.Open: Tue-Fri 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sat 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sun 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- 5 Forest park. Large park with a sculpture path and fitness equipment.Open: all day.
- 6 Vytautas mountain (Birštono piliakalnis, Vytauto kalnas, Castle hill). 30 meter high castle hill, to be climbed by stairs. Nice view of the place and the next Memel loop.Open: all day.
- 7 Municipal Museum (Birstono muziejus). Open: Tue-Fri 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sat 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sun 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Bathing opportunities are offered in the three man-made lakes in the municipality. There is also a rowing club in Birštonas. The opportunity for a hot air balloon ride over the Memel loop should not be missed. If there are no balloon events, you could also book a sightseeing flight in Pociūnai. - In winter there are two 160 and 300 meter long ski slopes with a drag lift.
The international festival takes place in March every two years Birštona's jazz in the cultural center.

As a spa town, the place has a wide range of options in every price range. The big hotels are mostly connected with sanatoriums and the possibility of spa treatments. Apartments and smaller houses are also rented out.

The tourist information office also arranges private rooms and guest houses from around 10 euros per night. If WLAN is not available there, you can use the free offer in the city library or in (hotel) restaurants.

A spa stay in Birštonas will probably be one of the exotic pleasures, i.e. you will rarely meet other German spa guests. With doctors you can count on English or German language skills. The pharmacy is 50 meters east of the tourist information. There are other pharmacies in the IKI and Norfa supermarkets.
