Map of Bischofszell

background

The city was founded by the Bishops of Constance before 1000. At this point, at the point of confluence of the two rivers Sitter and Thur, they founded a fortified city in a strategically favorable location, which secured their lands against the claims of St. Gallen.

Around 70 houses were destroyed in the town fire in 1743. The reconstruction was carried out by the overall plan of the brothers Ulrich, Jakob and Johann Grubenmann, who also erected some buildings. This reconstruction gave the old town its current structure.
