Black River is a city in Jamaica.
background
This small port town at the mouth of the river of the same name was founded around 1671. The administrative center for the St. Elizabeth district was moved here in 1773 from the village of Lacovia, 26 km away. At the end of the 19th century the place became very wealthy. Electricity was available as early as 1883 and the first telephone in 1903. On the river, kampescheholz was poured down from the hinterland to be shipped to Europe. The color of the wood is used in the textile industry. Only a few colonial-style buildings date from that time.
The main street by the sea is Main Street, in the center it becomes High Street and behind the Black River Bridge it is called Crane Road. In the center it has been made a one-way street. The main road north to Kingston is North Street. From here, Market Street branches off towards the market square and Brigade Street towards the fire station.
The Anglican Church on the corner of High Street and North Street was built of brick in 1837. The foundation walls of the previous church from 1774 are still visible there.
With a length of 70 km, the Black River is the longest river on the island and 40 km in length it is navigable. Its origins begin in Cockpit Country. On its shores, swamp areas of more than 5,700 hectares spread out. It is the largest marshland in the whole of the Caribbean. The river itself is relatively shallow. American freshwater crocodiles can still be found there today. Directly behind the bridge, on which the main road crosses the Black River, there is a landing stage for the boats that take tourists up the river to watch birds and crocodiles. On the western side of the village there is also a large provider for these trips, as well as another, small entrepreneur.
getting there
In the street
Black River is on the A 2 national road, but actually in nowhere. On both sides, a good 6 km in front of and behind the town, a side street has been used as a shortcut main street for decades, so all through traffic flows past the town. In a south-easterly direction at some distance from the coast you can also follow Treasure Beach.

trips
- Boat trips on the Black River. Departures every hour or as required. In the past, these trips were carried out with boats similar to fishing boats, lasted two hours and went a good seven kilometers up the river. Larger ships have been in use for about 15 years; they are similar to a cigar box, built like a catamaran or trimaran, with two powerful engines. The journey only takes an hour, the river is only navigated for four kilometers. Allegedly this has insurance reasons.Price: The fare is 16.50 US dollars.
