Boulder is a university city in the US state Colorado, not far from Denver, at the foot of the Rocky Mountains.

background

Until the middle of the 19th century, Arapaho, Ute, Cheyenne, Comanches and Sioux lived in the region. The first Europeans appeared around 1858 when Boulder was still part of the Nebraska Territory. "Boulder City" became a city in 1871, ten years after the Colorado Territory was founded. In 1873 the city was connected to the railway network. In 1876 - the same year Colorado became an American state - the University of Colorado opened in Boulder.

The determining economic factor in the region was the mining of gold, silver and coal until the middle of the 20th century.

University of Colorado students make up about a third of the population, and along with faculty and other staff, university staff make up nearly half of the population. As a result, the city is now considered one of the most liberal in the state. 1975 e.g. B. Boulder became the second city in the country where same-sex couples could get marriage permits. In various rankings, Boulder is ranked among the most educated, healthiest, most livable, LGBT-friendly and cities with the best food offerings in the USA. Due to the fact that the population is politically far left by American standards, the “People's Republic of Boulder” is sometimes used mockingly.

getting there

By plane

Boulder is just under 70 miles from the international Denver Airport (DEN) removed. The SkyRide bus line AB or AB1 goes from the airport directly to Boulder city center in just over an hour. It runs every hour every day, during peak times on working days (mornings and afternoons) every half an hour. The ticket costs $ 9 (seniors 65 and older and students 19 and under half) and is valid all day.

By train

Denver Union Station is 28 miles from Boulder. From there you can take the express bus routes FF1 and FF2 to the center of Boulder in 40–50 minutes (see under bus).

By bus

If you travel by long-distance bus, it is best to get off at Denver Union Station, from where there are frequent and fast connections to Boulder.

The express bus lines ("Flatiron Flyer") FF1 and FF2 of the RTD Denver drive from Union Station in downtown Denver via the U.S. Route 36 straight to Boulder. FF1 runs every quarter of an hour Mon-Sat and every half hour on Sundays and takes just under 50 minutes to the center of Boulder. In the evenings there are half-hourly intervals on weekdays from 9 p.m. to 1.15 p.m. On Saturdays the bus runs every half hour from 6 p.m. to midnight, then there are two “stragglers” at 0.58 and 2.18; On Sundays and public holidays it only runs every hour from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. The FF2 line is even faster. It leaves out a few stops and therefore only takes 40 minutes, but only runs on weekdays during peak hours (6.30–9.30 and 3.30–7.30 p.m.), but runs every five to ten minutes. From the Civic Center and State Capitol or the corner of 18th St & California St in the main business district of Denver, you can take line FF4 to Boulder Junction at Depot Square (2.5 km east of the city center), but only during commuter hours on Mon-Fri morning and night in the afternoon.

A single trip from Denver to Boulder costs $ 4.50, a day ticket is $ 9 (seniors and students each cost half).

In the street

Boulder is on the U.S. Route 36 between Denver (45 km southeast, travel time with good traffic conditions a good half an hour) and Lyons (25 km northwest; 25 minutes). From the northwest, the four-lane Colorado State Highway 119 leads from Longmont to Boulder (25 km; 25 minutes)
