Background
Important Roman settlement, in the 1st century BC. was the main center of Gallaecia with the name of Bracara Augusta, in the 5th century AD. it became the capital of the kingdom of Galicia and was the first bishopric of the whole Iberian peninsula. In the 8th century it was occupied by the Arabs and was reconquered in 1040. It then became the primary seat of the kingdom of Castile until the independence of Portugal from the Spanish and was governed by the archbishops until the end of the 18th century. Subsequently, the history of Braga was that of Portugal without any particular protagonism.

The center of Braga ideally develops for about one kilometer around the city's cathedral (Sé). It is quite easy to find your way around, given the size of the city center. The historic center is therefore easily reachable both from the bus station (where daily buses arrive from Porto), which is located a few hundred meters north of the center, and from the train station, also close to the center. The Sanctuary of Bom Jesus, on the other hand, for which many go to Braga, is located 7 km outside the city.
