Brisbane is the capital of Queensland.
To know
Brisbane is a pleasant city of two million inhabitants located on the river of the same name at a distance of about 30 km from its mouth. Lying about 4 ° below the Tropic of Capricorn, the city enjoys an extremely mild climate in winter. Proof of this are its numerous parks and gardens where palm trees and tropical plants flourish.
Thanks to its international airport, Brisbane is the closest base to the Great Barrier Reef and its natural wonders.
About sixty kilometers to the south is Gold Coast, a seaside resort that develops on a 40 km sandy coast compared to Miami for the forest of skyscrapers that surround the beaches and for the countless opportunities for recreation.
The stretch of coast north of the city is called the more rural-looking Sunshine Coast. Fraser Island, the largest sandy island in the world extends to the northern edge of the Sunshine Coast (About 200 km from the center).
A little further on is the Bundaberg Bay with the Lady Elliot Island marking the beginning of the Great Barrier Reef and that laps the whole coast of Queensland north to end in the Gulf of Papua 2,000 km further north.
How to orient yourself
The center of Brisbane sits on a sharp-angled bend in the river and is shaped like an inverted triangle. The streets that have a north-east south-west course bear the names of male members of the British royal house, those that cross them at right angles of female exponents.
Neighborhoods
- Fortitude Valley - The hub of Brisbane's nightlife and venue for major musical events, Fortitude Valley is the extended neighborhood northeast of downtown. Its trendiest street is James Street.
The neighborhood takes its name from the SS Fortitude ship which landed in Brisbane in 1849 with a cargo of Scottish immigrants who had been granted plots of land.
- New Farm - Southeast of Fortitude Valley and two kilometers from downtown, New Farm stretches over a bend in the Brisbane River and is renowned for its shopping as well as the local Merthyr Street. The neighborhood comes alive especially on weekends.
How to get
By plane
Brisbane International Airport is located about twenty kilometers east of the city center, close to the coast.
Scheduled flights from Europe are operated by Qantas Airways, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways International.
The airport has two terminals, one for international flights and the other for domestic ones. The shuttle between the two is ensured by shuttle trains (Airtrain). The frequency varies from 15 to 30 minutes so you will have to calculate two hours in case you find yourself needing to move from one terminal to another. Airtran also provides connection to the city center. Trains stop at various stations and then continue on to Gold Coast.
Alternatively you can reach the center with the bus service of the CoachTrans but you will have to make a reservation before leaving and in case you miss the bus you will not be refunded the price of the ticket.
The cheaper but also less comfortable alternative is to board the "Brisbane Airport Courtesy Bus" to DFO / Number 1 Airport Village, where the 308 bus terminates for the Toombul Interchange station, where you can catch a train that stop at the central station (Roma street).
If you need to reach Brisbane from other Australian airports, consider that low cost airlines operate at Brisbane airport Jetstar Airways is Tiger Airways Australia
