Areas where Bulgarian is spoken

The Bulgarian (български език) is a Slavic language of the southern group (like the Croatian, Serbian, Slovenian is Macedonian). It is spoken by the approximately 10-11 million inhabitants of Bulgaria and by sizeable Bulgarian communities in Europe and abroad. Bulgarian is very similar to its Macedonian neighbor, long considered its dialect and today recognized as a language in its own right, although speakers of Bulgarian are able to understand a large part of a speech given or a book written in Macedonian.

All Slavic languages ​​are strikingly similar but what characterizes Bulgarian is its complex verbal system. In this language, in fact, there are a large number of tenses and ways to which is added, as for all other Slavic languages, the category of appearance (which allows the speaker to refer to an action as concluded / punctual or as a event that unfolds for a certain period of time) .The nominal system is on the other hand much simpler than the one eg. of Russian: the cases have completely disappeared, replaced as in Italian or English by prepositions. Nouns can be masculine, feminine and neuter.

Another characteristic of Bulgarian is the fact that it is a Balkan language, a language that it shares with the others in the region (Greek, Albanian, Macedonian and in part Romanian is Serbian) a series of peculiar characteristics, due to the centuries-old contact of these peoples, whose languages ​​have influenced each other. Among the easily recognizable Balkan characteristics of the Bulgarian are the presence of postponed articles:

  • град (city) vs. градът (the city)

and the absence of infinity. A sentence like I want return at home translates to Bulgarian with Искам да се прибера вкъщи (literally "I want me to go home").


Guide to transcription

Bulgarian is written in Cyrillic; to tell the truth it was the Bulgarians who invented this alphabet (c. IX century AD) which over time spread to many Slavic countries, replacing the oldest Slavic alphabet, the Glagolitic. Bulgarian Cyrillic is very similar to Russian, except for a few letters. The main feature, which allows you to recognize a Bulgarian text at a glance, is the widespread use of the letter ъ which in Russian simply indicates the absence of palatalization (pronounced more sweet) of the consonants and which in Bulgarian indicates the indistinct vowel [ə], very similar to the "e" in English "the".
