History

Until the end of the 19th century the territory was dominated by mosques, but the creation of their empire was hindered by the French, who came in 1896 and proclaimed the land theirs. The opposition to the motions ended only with the fall of their capital, Haggadugu, in 1901. The Upper Volt colony was founded in 1919, but the shores have repeatedly changed to their current form, which represents the state in 1947.

Independence of the Upper Volt from France took place in 1960. Between 1984 and 1987 the state was ruled by Thomas Sankara, also known as Che Guevara of Africa. Sankara became very popular because he had many successes among others in development of medicine. He was soon replaced, however, by a more Western-oriented figure of Blaise Compaoré, a colleague of Sankara, who organized an armed overthrow and killed Sankara.

From Gorom Gorom one can take a camel ride in the desert with an overnight stay in the wild. Such an attraction can be expensive because the tours are diverse.

At Banfora there are beautiful waterfalls with the possibility of passing there on foot. The entrance fee is approx. 2 thousand francs. It is generally a bad idea to swim in rivers in the region, as there is a likelihood of getting sick with bilharzia. Locals may insist that the place is safe, but excessive caution is preferable.

Also at Banfora it is possible to take a boat ride to see hippos. Don’t expect much from that ride, you may just see the ears of the animals as they prefer to dive and thus sit for hours. Remember that hippos are dangerous and can react poorly to over-approaching boats.

To the west of Banfora are Sindu rocks.

In Burkina Faso you can buy custom-made clothing, the cost of production is low, the local special style will long remind you of the trip.

Crocodile lakes can be seen from the capital to Bobo Diulaso. In Bobo Diulaso the mud mosque is famous (take off your shoes to enter, dress modestly, there is an entrance fee and it is necessary to pay extra to children who keep the shoes of the entrants).
