Con Dao - Côn Đảo

Con Dao is a group of islands in the province BA Ria Vung Tau, located off the coast South East (Vietnam) and is also a district directly under Ba Ria - Vung Tau province. Con Dao or Con Son is also often used for the name of the largest island in this archipelago.

Vietnamese history before the 20th century often referred to Con Son island as Con Lon or Con Non island. The old name in English and French texts is Poulo Condor. In 1977, the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam decided the official name was Con Dao.

Natural Geography

Con Dao is located far from Vung Tau 97 nautical miles and 45 nautical miles from Hau river mouth. Con Dao has the same longitude as Ho Chi Minh City (106°36′ East) and the same latitude as the province Ca Mau (8°36′ North).

Con Dao archipelago consists of sixteen islands with a total surface area of ​​76 km². The list is as follows:

Con Dao town

Con Dao town is the place where the entire economic, political and social life of the archipelago is concentrated. The town is located on a semicircular valley at 106°36′10″ East longitude and 8°40′57″ North latitude. The average altitude is about 3 m above sea level. The length is from 8 to 10 km and the width is from 2 to 3 km. One side overlooks the sea (Southeast Bay) while the other three sides are surrounded by mountains. From the mainland, there are regular trips to Con Dao. Con Dao town is located in the middle of Co Ong airport and Ben Dam port. (approximate distance is about 12 km).
