Cadiz is a city ofAndalusia in Spain.

Understand

Geography

Cadiz is built on a rock connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway and on the edge of a bay opening onto the Atlantic Ocean about 30 kilometers south of the mouth of the Guadalquivir.

Story

Cadiz is one of the oldest cities inEurope, founded under the name of Gades in 1104 BC. AD by the Phoenicians, and then resembled Tire. From 700 BC. AD to 600 BC. AD the city was a rich market where one found amber and pewter. The Carthaginians captured the city in 501 BC. J.-C .. She rallied to the Romans in 205 BC. AD during the Second Punic War, which earned him preferential treatment from the Roman Republic. Julius Caesar granted its inhabitants Roman citizenship in 49 BC. AD because they had sided with him and driven out the Pompeians (Dion Cassius, 41,24).

The city was destroyed by the Visigoths in the 5th century. In 711, it was taken by the Moors, who rebuilt it. In 858, it was plundered by the Viking chief Hasting.

Then Alfonso X, King of Castile and León, took over the city in 1262.

After the transatlantic crossing of Christopher Columbus in 1492, the Spanish ships which brought back the treasures of the Americas elected Cadiz as their home port and the city became one of the richest in Europe. When the other maritime powers in Europe began to threaten Spain's naval supremacy, Cadiz faced many battles. An English fleet led by Sir Francis Drake attacked the port in 1587 destroying numerous vessels and in 1596 the town was plundered by English ships under the orders of Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex. During the following century, Cadiz was attacked by the English on three occasions.

The city counts XVIIe and XVIIIe centuries an important French community. In 1762, the net commercial profits of the French, calculated by the Catastro to serve as the basis for the Unica contribucion, corresponded for Cádiz to 472,200 pesos or piastres, or 1,888,800 pounds and 42.45% of all profits. These figures underestimate the share of the French, because these French traders established in Cadiz and Seville work for foreign traders, especially English.

One of these French, Armand Joseph Dubernad is a trader in Seville and Morlaix but also commissioner and shareholder of the bank of Saint-Charles created by his cousin François Cabarrus, Minister of the King of Spain. It finances the Murcia canal as well as the wars waged by the King of Spain. Despite the protection of Floridablanca, François Cabarrus and the ambassadors and consuls, he was persecuted by the Inquisition.

On November 1, 1755, Cadiz was hit hard by the Lisbon earthquake, which destroyed a third of the city, throwing many dwellings into the sea and dismantling the commercial and military port structures. As a result, the Hispanic maritime economy is greatly affected and trade with the Americas will henceforth pass through French, English or Dutch ports. It will be the beginning of the end of Spain as a Catholic policeman of the world, as a maritime and economic power, and this earthquake will upset the economic and religious order of Europe.

Because of the French Revolution, wars and the blockade, these French will have to return to France. Cadiz was blocked by the British fleet for almost fifteen months between 1797 and 1798.

During the Napoleonic wars, Cadiz was besieged by the French fleet from February 1810 to August 1812. It gave its name to the first Spanish constitution, the Constitution of Cadiz, nicknamed "la Pepa" in honor of Joseph Napoleon (Pépé is the diminutive of José, Joseph in Spanish) in 1812. When Spain lost its colonies in America in the 19th century, the city's wealth began to decline.

the , the fort of Trocadéro which defended the port was removed at low tide by the French expeditionary force commanded by the Duke of Angoulême, sent by his uncle Louis XVIII to re-establish King Ferdinand VII on his throne. The former Trocadero Palace in Paris was built to commemorate this feat of arms.

During the Spanish Civil War, Cadiz was a base for the nationalist forces of General Franco.
