Chalcis is the capital ofEuboea.
To know
Chalcis is mainly a stopover for tourists who want to see the beautiful beaches of the island, which are mostly arranged on the east coast (1 - 2.5 hours from Chalcis).
Geographical notes
Chalcis is located at the entrance to the island from the mainland. The city is built on the coasts ofEuboea (island) and of the Boeotia (mainland) of the Strait of Euripe. The two coasts are connected with two bridges.
The city is 69 km from the Greek capital, Athens.

As a Greek island, Evia has a hot summer which allows residents to swim at the numerous small beaches in the northern part of the city (on both coasts).
Background
During the Middle Ages the city was a Venetian fortress, known as "Negroponte".

Chalcis has a wonderful urban coastal area, built on the two coasts of the Strait of Euripe. The city is mainly developed on the island, where there is the center and the best neighborhoods. However, it is the neighborhoods near the waterfront that overlook the strait that are the most in demand and well maintained.

By bus
- 2 Bus station (KTEL), ☎ 30 22210 20400. The bus station is located in the eastern part of the city in a somewhat secluded position. However, there are several routes to various locations in Greece. To find out the links just consult the site.
How to get around
By taxi
In the square of the KTEL terminus it is also possible to find taxis, being located in a slightly peripheral area of the city and in front of the station. Another taxi stand is located on the 3 seafront next to the bridge or you can call the radio taxi on 30 22210 89300.
By car
As soon as you cross the bridge and reach the island, there are several private paid parking lots. Perhaps the best solution to avoid penalties. Below is a list of paid parking spaces:

What to do
Take a walk along the promenade. The city is a very pleasant place to stroll, especially along the island's waterfront or crossing the bridge to continue along the side of the mainland. Or along the internal pedestrian streets which are also very popular for shopping.
Take the rubberized train for a 30-minute sightseeing tour of the city.
