Cambrai is a city in France. It lies on the banks of the Escaut im North department in the region Nord-Pas-de-Calais.
background
Little is known about Cambrai's origins. The area was inhabited by the Belgian Nervier tribe and subjected to the Gallic War under Julius Caesar. The city appears under several names in Roman documents of the 4th century, including Civitas Camaracensium and Camaracum. Around 445 the Salfranken conquered Cambrai and at the end of the 5th century the Merovingians under Clovis. Under the Carolingians, the city became part of the Duchy of Lorraine and thus part of the Holy Roman Empire. Due to its neutrality and border location between France and the Habsburg Empire, Cambrai was the scene of various international negotiations. In 1508 the League of Cambrai was founded, an alliance against the Republic of Venice. The Cambrai Women's Peace in 1529 ended the war between Francis I of France and Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire. In the Peace of Nijmegen, Cambrai, now part of the Spanish Netherlands, was ceded by Spain to France in 1677. During World War I, German troops occupied the city in 1914 and it became the headquarters of Paul von Hindenburg. When the German troops withdrew in 1918, the city was set on fire and most of the buildings were destroyed. During World War II, the city was again occupied by German troops and was the target of many Allied air raids, in which a large part of the city's buildings were again damaged and destroyed.
