Urban centers

  • 1 Castro-Urdiales - The ancient "Portus Amanum", mentioned by Pliny the Elder in his treatise Naturalis historia, is today famous for its charming medieval center and also for the nearby beaches with hotels.
  • 2 Comillas - Pretty coastal village, much loved by members of the nobility and the royal house of Spain, as well as by artists such as Antoni Gaudí and Domènech i Montaner who spent long periods there. The first left a Comillas an extravagant building, Il Capriccio, one of the few works by Gaudí performed outside the Catalonia.
  • 3 Laredo - Renowned for its historic center and its long beaches which make it a popular seaside resort.
  • 4 Oriñón - Located on a deep inlet of the coast, Oriñón it is a village of just 116 with some beautiful beaches in its surroundings suitable for campers.
  • 5 San Vicente de la Barquera - One of the most renowned tourist centers on the Cantabrian coast. It is located inside the parque natural de Oyambre which forms one with the parque natural de las Dunas de Liencres.
  • 6 Santander - Capital and largest city of Cantabria, Santander it is also an internationally renowned seaside resort, with a tradition dating back to the Belle Époque, when it was frequented by crowned heads.
  • 7 Santillana del Mar - Famous for its historic center with charming alleys overlooked by pretty traditional houses in stone and wood.
  • 8 Santoña - A fishing port dominated by mighty fortresses and surrounded by magnificent beaches such as Playa de Berria.

Other destinations

  • Altamira cave (Cueva de Altamira) - In the vicinity of Santillana del Mar, the cave is famous for the upper Paleolithic wall paintings depicting human hands and wild animals. It is a very articulated natural cavity, 270 meters long and with a variable height from two to six meters. In 1985 the Altamira cave was included in the UNESCO list of world heritage sites.
  • 1 Natural Park of the Sequoias of Monte Cabezón - A forest of Sequoia sempervirens on Monte de Las Navas, in the locality of Cabezón de la Sal.
  • 2 Picos de Europa National Park (Parque nacional de Picos de Europa)
