Tourist Attractions
- Howe Caverns, 255 Discovery Drive, Howes Cave, 4 miles northwest of Schoharie, Schoharie County. One of the most beautiful caves in the country. The very elongated cave washed into the limestone by an underground river was discovered in 1842 and has an eventful history. Most of it can be explored on guided tours (starts every 10 minutes in summer). The tour lasts 80 minutes and includes a boat ride on the underground river. (Real cave fans, who like to slide around on their hands and knees, book the in good time instead of the standard package Adventure tour.) As in any cave, bring sensible footwear and even in midsummer long trousers and a light jacket. Visiting with children is not a problem, but they either have to be able to walk or be carried in the arm, because prams and other bulky items have to stay in the car.
