Newark is a city in New Jersey. Newark owes its tourist importance mainly to the fact that the Newark Liberty International Airport located, one of the main airports in the New York Metropolitan Area. However, Newark is also the largest city in the state New Jersey.

background

Before the European colonization, the area belonged to the settlement area of the Hackensack, a tribe of the Lenni Lenape. Newark was founded in 1666 by Puritan settlers New Haven (Connecticut) founded. The name is believed to be from Newark-on-Trent in English Nottinghamshire derived. This original settlement was at what is now the intersection of Broad Street and Market Street, den Four corners. The initially theocratic character of the strictly religious colony was soon lost due to the influx of further settlers who had different religious ideas.

In 1836 Newark was granted city rights. From that time on, the city grew rapidly. It developed into an important center for industry and the handling of goods, the latter being largely helped by the rail link with New York City that was opened in 1869. The brewing industry played an important role, for example the breweries P. Ballantine & Sons (once the third largest brewery in the USA) and Krueger (the first manufacturer of canned beer). In the second half of the 19th century, numerous immigrants moved from various European countries, among others. from Germany and Italy, to the booming industrial city. A large Jewish community also emerged. In the 1860s the mark of 100,000 inhabitants was exceeded. Since many buildings were built of brick at the time, Newark is nicknamed "The Brick City". In 1885, the Newark Technical School was founded, from which today's New Jersey Institute of Technology emerged.

The importance of Newark as a traffic center was reinforced by the construction of the huge port of Port Newark-Elizabeth around 1920 (temporarily the largest container port in the world) and the opening of the airport in 1928. Another nickname of the city speaks for this: "The Gateway City"

From the middle of the 20th century, Newark experienced - like many large US cities - a "white flight". H. a large part of the ancestral European population moved to the suburbs on the outskirts, while the actual urban area increasingly concentrated Afro-American and Latinos. This was exacerbated by the riots in the summer of 1967, which terrified and drove many members of the middle class. Between 1950 and 2000, the population shrank by 38%. Many parts of the city became impoverished. However, there has been a strong revitalization of the inner city since the 1990s. Cultural activities in the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and sporting events in the Prudential Center make downtown attractive again for the middle class. Since 2000 the population has increased again slightly. However, a third of the urban population is still considered poor by US standards. A good half of the population are African-Americans, about a third are Latin Americans (mainly Puerto Rican) and 12% are “non-Hispanic whites”.

Philip Roth, one of the most important American writers of the 20th and early 21st centuries, was born and raised in Newark. Most of his novels are set in the city.

The insurance group is one of the largest companies based in Newark Prudential Financial, the audio book provider Audible and the North American headquarters of the Japanese technology group Panasonic.
