It doesn't just include the five Boroughs from New York City, long Island and a few more counties in the south of the state new York, but also extensive areas in the states New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. The total population of the New York Metropolitan Area was estimated at 18,747,320 in 2005.
