Castellar de la Frontera is a small village with a large castle in the Province of Cadiz in the Spanish region Andalusia.
background
Castellar Viejo(36 ° 19 ′ 5 ″ N.5 ° 27 ′ 12 ″ W.) is the district with the large castle complex Castillo de Castellar from the 14th century on a mountain (about 250 m high) above the Rio Guadarranque, about 25 km north of Algeciras. The castle and the small village within the fortress walls are used for tourism today, and country houses can be rented there.
In 1971 a new village with improved living conditions was built in the valley, about 10 km from the castle village: Castellar Nuevo(36 ° 17 ′ 9 ″ N.5 ° 25 ′ 13 ″ E) , there is also a small district 2 km south: La Almoraima(36 ° 16 '37 "N.5 ° 25 ′ 45 ″ E)which was originally a workers' settlement.
The municipality is almost entirely in the area of the "Parque Natural de Los Alcornocales" (Alcornocales = cork oaks) and also on the Ruta del Toro (Route of the Bulls).

By plane
The next airport is open Gibraltar, which is not served from Germany. The nearest airport with German airlines is in Jerez (113 km, 1:30 h on country roads), also is the Malaga airport (118 km, 1:15 h, motorway, chargeable) easy to reach.
By train
Castellar is on the Renfe Railway line (Media distancia) from Algeciras (about 20 minutes away) Ronda (1: 25h) and Bobadilla (2: 20h), the train station is in the Almoraima district (Estación de Almoraima).
In the street
From Málaga you can reach Castellar via the AP-7 (toll) to exit 130, then continue on the A4100 towards Guadiaro / Castellar (the last section consists of a narrow, winding mountain road). It is more convenient if you continue to exit 116 and take the A-405 (a small detour but much easier to drive)
From Algeciras or Ronda you can reach Nuevo Castellar on the A405. From there it goes on the CA9201 up the mountain to Castellar Castle.
By boat
The nearest sea port is Algeciras on the Mediterranean.

There are two buses on the line in the morning and two in the evening on weekdays M-170 from San Pablo via Jimena and Castellar de la Frontera to Algeciras and back.
Tourist Attractions
- Castillo de Castellar. The castle Castillo de Castellar is worth seeing because of its size and the good state of preservation, as is the view from there of the reservoir, Gibraltar and, in good weather, to Africa. Inside the fortress walls is the Iglesia del Divino Salvador.
- Iglesia Divino Salvador. In the new part of the village is the Iglesia Divino Salvador with the figure of Christ Santísimo Cristo de la Almoraima.
- Convento de la Almoraima. Monastery built in 1603, 1 km on the CA-P-5131 road from Nueva Castellar up to the castle, now a hotel.
- Finca La Almoraima. Estate, agriculture and hunting area (stag, roe deer, fallow deer, ibex).
- Torre de la Almoraima. On a hill, is now used as a broadcasting station.

- Los Alcornocales Natural Park. (German-speaking hiking tips) with extensive cork oak / mountain oak forests (also wild olive trees, holm oaks, alders, ash and carob trees), which merge into floodplain landscapes in the southern stream valleys (canutos) (map). Inside is the "Reserva Nacional de Caza de Cortes de la Frontera" with laurel trees, ferns and rhododendron bushes. Red deer and roe deer are hunted, sheep are allowed to graze, otters live by the streams. Many species of birds can be observed, the whole area is a paradise for birds of prey.

In the center of the new Castellar there is a small pedestrian zone (between Calla Montaser Kattani and Calle Juan Carlos) where there are some (tapa) bars, cafes, a supermarket, the post office and a la Caixa bank with an ATM. Every now and then, fresh chestnuts roasted on site are sold in the evenings. In addition, small flea markets take place at irregular intervals.
