Johannesburg Center is the area that includes the former business district (Johannesburg CBD) of the citySouth African.

To know

Downtown Johannesburg boasts the largest collection of skyscrapers on the African continent. However, due to the migration of whites to the northern suburbs of Sandton and Rosebank, which occurred in 1990 due to the crime afflicting the center, the buildings that once housed the headquarters of banks and offices of multinationals are now left to fend for themselves. Restoration work has begun on some of the buildings but the center of Johannesburg remains high risk and the only way to visit it is to board the tour buses that depart from Sandton and Rosebank.

Neighborhoods

  • Newtown it is the district of the west of the center bounded by the M2 motorway to the south and the railway lines to the north. Major works have been carried out to renovate it and ensure conditions that could guarantee its safety for its inhabitants and visitors.
  • Braamfontein is the district north of Newtown, which is also the subject of rehabilitation works. Its flagship is the 2003 bridge that spans the railway lines and dedicated to Nelson Mandela. There is the old fort of Constitution Hill, long used as a prison where Willie Mandela was held.
  • Hillbrow it was the district of the great hotels that closed their doors in the last decade of the twentieth century. As of 2019 it was still regarded as a high-risk area.
