Chateauroux, the capital of Indre, is located in the wide valley of the river of the same name. It was founded by Prince Raoul von Déols, who built the aforementioned castle here in 950, and by King Louis XIII. in favor of Henry of Bourbon was raised to a duchy, which Louis XV. his mistress Marie Anne de Mailly, Duchess of Châteauroux (d. 1744), bestowed.
