Map of Indre

The department can be divided into 4 major tourist areas from north to south (from Lochois to Creuse) and several cities steeped in history.

  • Le Boischaut-Nord - Pays de Valençay: A farmland surrounded by hedges on the border with Touraine and the Lochois region, whose tourism is now dedicated to the splendor of Napoleonic diplomacy, around the castle of Prince de Talleyrand in Valençay Château de Valencay, essentially Renaissance style, the magnificent residence of Talleyrand, Napoleon's Foreign Minister. Together with Bouges and Azay-le-Ferron, it forms the "golden triangle" of the department's castles.
  • La Brenne - Pays des Mille Étangs: France's 26th Regional Natural Park is born from the desire to preserve the environment, natural and cultural heritage and economic dynamism. Hunting, fishing (in ponds), fish farming (Maison de la Pisciculture in Mézières-en-Brenne). The fauna and flora is remarkable, especially the wild orchids, numerous ponds, fish, with their dragonflies, millions of migratory birds and their cistulas, small freshwater turtles.
  • Châteauroux and the Val de l'Indre: Châteauroux (Château Raoul), owes its name to its founder Raoul de Déols (937). In the old parts of the city there are beautiful old houses, including that of General Bertrand, Napoleon's loyal companion, which is now a museum. Cordeliers Convention. Big Equinox stage. Belle Isle Park of 12 hectares. Saint Gildas protected meadow. Tropical greenhouses. In August: D.A.R.C. festival, workshops and contemporary dance shows. Déols, birthplace of Châteauroux. Neolithic and Gallo-Roman remains. Remains of the mighty abbey from the 12th century, demolished by Condé, of which one of the 7 bell towers is still preserved. Porte de l'Horloge (15th century) Saint Etienne church (10th to 16th centuries) Eco-Parc des Chènevières.
  • Issoudun and the Champagne Berrichonne: Issoudun, former royal city, Tour Blanche, many houses from the 15th. Memories of Honoré de Balzac, who wrote "La Rabouilleuse". Saint Roch Hospice Museum. Vatan, pretty town with picturesque streets lined with 17th and 18th century houses
  • Le Boischaut-Sud - the land of George Sand : Another land of the often hilly bocages, in which the old landscape of meadows or fields surrounded by "bouchures" - thick, tree-planted hedges - is still partially preserved. Tourist life is dominated by the passage from George Sand to Nohant. Several festivals: the Fêtes Romantiques in June (chamber music, theater and literature) and the Rencontres Internationales Frédéric Chopin in July (piano) in Nohant, the Rencontres Internationales des Luthiers et Maîtres Sonneurs around July 14th in Saint-Chartier.
