Khabarovsky is a city in the far east of Russia, located on the left bank of the Amur River at the mouth of the Ussuri, not far from the border with China (Manchuria). Khabarovsk is the capital of the Krai of the same name and of the Far East Federal District.
Understand
The city was founded in 1858 as a military post at the mouth of the Ussuri in the Amur and was named Khabarovka after the 17th-century pioneer Yeforei Khabarov. In 1895 Khabarovsk was given its current name.
The city was conquered by the Bolsheviks only in 1922 during the Russian Civil War.
In 1926 Khabarovsk became the administrative center of the Dalnevostochnyy Krai region, since 1938 it has been the capital of the Khabarovsk Krai.
In December 1949, trials were held in the city against 12 members of the Japanese Kwantun army who had been part of the so-called Unit 731. They were on trial for producing and using biological weapons during World War II.
In the 1960s, a border dispute arose between Russia and China over a number of islands in the Amur, near Khabarovsk. The so-called Amur conflict nearly escalated into a nuclear war in 1969. It was not until 2005 that a final agreement was reached on the islands, with China getting almost all the islands, but only 50% of the island closest to Khabarovsk, so as not to let the city come next to China.
