background
The place name goes back to the indigenous people and the palm trees that were found along the shoreline at that time. In 1797 the Spaniards hid their ships there from the attacking English.
During the Second World War, this peninsula and its surroundings were a US military base. America leased the whole area from the English, in return they received 50 used warships. The residents were forcibly relocated to Carenage. The entire bay was heavily secured against German submarines. The golf course in Tucker Valley was also laid out by American soldiers. After the war, the place was almost extinct. After demonstrations and protests by the Trinidadian population, Chaguaramas was evacuated by the Americans in 1961. But there are still bunkers and empty aircraft hangars and warehouses from the 1940s there today. Only in the last 15 years has a busy life developed through the settlement of several small shipyards and marinas. The number of entered, registered sailing ships rose from 65 boats in 1990 to 2,590 in 1997. The bay in front of the site is one of the safest anchorages in the entire Caribbean region.
The Yachting Association has berths for over 200 sailing boats. At the end of the village are the halls of the Ministry of National Security, in which the government helicopters are housed. In the further course the road behind the Cove Beach Resort is closed, the area is used by the national coast guard and the Trinidad & Tobago Defense Force, so that the northwest coast of the island is not accessible to the public.
The Chaguaramas Development Authority (CDA) has plans to develop the peninsula and some of the offshore islands as tourist centers.
