Chalon-sur-Saône is a french City in the department Saône-et-Loire, in the Burgundy.

background

To Dijon it is the second largest city of Burgundy and also of the department. However, it is only the capital of the arrondissement Chalon-sur-Saône, while the smaller Mâcon is the seat of the prefecture. Chalon-sur-Saône is also the administrative seat of four cantons.

The city has always been very conveniently located. It is located on the banks of the Saône, which is quite wide here, and at the end of the Canal du Center and ultimately between Paris and Marseille. It's an old marketplace.

The city goes back to the Gallo-Roman Cabillonum, which was one of the main places of the Äduer, which has existed since approx. 300 BC. The city became a bishopric in the middle of the 5th century. Around this time the place became Burgundian and in 534 Franconian. King Guntram I made Chalon the residence of the part of Burgundy, which resulted in one of the most important cities in Gaul. Synods were also held as a result. Over time, the county of Chalon-sur-Saône was formed around the city, which was integrated into the Duchy of Burgundy in 1237, and together with Burgundy came to the French crown in 1477. The bishopric was abolished in 1801.

1791 was the 112 km long Canal du Center between Digoin and Chalon opened, with which the rivers Saône and Loire were connected. This important west-east shipping connection gave the city additional importance. The canal is now used almost exclusively for tourism.

To go biking

The "Blue Path" on the Saône

There are several well-developed bike paths:

  • direction Givry introduces Railway cycle path, which continues for approx. 74 km and brings the cyclist closer to the landscape of Burgundy. It ends in Mâcon.
  • To the north leaves a good and lovely 34 km long Voie Verte along the Canal du Center the city. A detour to Beaune is possible on this route. To do this you have to turn off in Santenay. The route is a non-signposted section of EuroVelo 6 and after it ends in Saint-Léger-sur-Dheune you can continue on country roads towards the Loire.
  • The unfortunately often not asphalted, patchy Voie Bleu ("Blue Path") leads along the Saône. By the way, there is only one Voie Bleu, in contrast to the Voies Vertes.
