Mâcon, the capital of Saône-et-Loire, is built irregularly and narrowly on the whole, but since the removal of the ramparts it has been embellished with promenades and quays.
getting there
Mâcon is on the old railway line from Paris to Lyon, but also got its own TGV station in the course of the construction of the parallel TGV high-speed line. Most of the TGV trains run through, but at least those of Geneva to Paris - so not unattractive for the Swiss. It's also very quick by car: the A 6 from Paris to Lyon passes the outskirts of the city; in the north, the A 40 from Geneva joins the first-mentioned motorway.
