Chersonisos (gr. Χερσόνησος), too Hersonissos, is a municipality in northeastern the greek island Crete. What is usually referred to as Chersonissos is actually just the port of the main town located a bit inland, which is now much smaller than the tourist port.
background
Chersonisos is about 25 km east of Iráklion. Agriana, Analipsis, Limin Hersonissos (port), Koutouloufari, Piskopiano and Malia belong to the municipality of Chersonisos. The region is heavily dependent on tourism, especially on the coast. The more than 3000 year old place is located in one of the most popular holiday regions of Crete and offers a large selection with its numerous hotel complexes and resorts, especially for package travelers. You will also find many small shops and tourist facilities such as car rentals, organizers of sports activities and much more.
getting there
By plane
The capital's airport Iráklion is only about 20 km west of the city. From here you can easily get to Chersonisos by bus or rental car.
By train
Since there is no rail network on Crete, it is not possible to travel there.
In the street
The now quite well developed A90 connects Chersonisos with the west of the island. From the east, however, the city can only be reached via various two-lane roads.

Practical advice
trips
From the touristy Chersonisos you can go on excursions into the quiet hinterland, where - not far from Chersonisos - there are still very original mountain villages that are characteristic of Crete.
