Columbus is the capital of American State Ohio, as well as its largest city. The city is located at the confluence of the Scioto and Olentangy Rivers and is home to the Ohio State University, one of the largest connected university complexes in the USA, as well as numerous large sports teams. Columbus is currently the 15th largest city in the United States.
Districts
Columbus can be roughly divided into the districts Downtown, University Area, Northwest Columbus, Northeast Columbus and South Columbus, whereby the individual neighborhoods within the districts can still differ significantly.
background
Columbus, which was built by a group of investors, was granted city rights in 1812. Many Germans settled in the city, so that the proportion of Germans in the population of Columbus temporarily made up a third. The influence of German culture in Columbus is still evident today, especially in the German Village and the Brewery District south of the city center. In the past, the construction of carriages was one of the largest industries in the city, giving Columbus the nickname Buggy Capital of the World received.

mobility
By bus
The bus routes of the Central Ohio Transit Authority cover most of the city and surrounding towns. Tickets cost $ 2.75 for an express bus and $ 2.00 for a Local / Crosstown bus. Change (English: transfers) between Local / Crosstown buses are free, but switching between bus types, e.g. B. from a local to an express route are chargeable. You ask the bus driver for a change when you pay your fare and receive a transfer pass that you use when boarding the next bus. You cannot get on a bus going in the opposite direction with a transfer pass (i.e. you cannot get off a bus route and get on a bus going the other way with the transfer pass).
On foot
Most of High St. (US Route 23) from Clintonville in the north to Merion Village in the south is pedestrian friendly. The neighborhoods between campus and Short North used to be pretty bleak. But gentrification and the growing number of student apartments, boutiques and restaurants have resulted in a more pedestrian-friendly environment. Downtown Columbus is within a 20 minute walk of most attractions. The Columbus Landmarks Foundation also conducts hikes.
By car
Columbus is an auto-centric city. Cars are used a lot even in the city center. Parking is easy and inexpensive at almost all major destinations. There are plenty of parking lots and garages around the city. There are few areas of the city, like Short North, where it is harder to find parking; however, there is ample parking for $ 5 per vehicle. Change of direction (English: u-turns) are forbidden in the entire city area.
It is a short drive ($ 20-50 by cab) to downtown from Port Columbus (airport) on I-670W. Uber and Lyft are also available. Travel expenses range on the lower end of the price range between $ 20-50.
Columbus is notorious for aggressive towing companies, especially downtown, on campus, and in Short North. Before parking anywhere, make sure there is no “Private Parking” or “Tow Away Zone” sign nearby.
By bicycle
CoGo Bike Share is a bike sharing sharing program with stations in the city center. You can pick up a bike at any station and return it at any station. A pass for $ 8 allows unlimited 30-minute rides within 24 hours. A pass for 3 × 24h costs $ 18.

Columbus is an important test market for American restaurant chains, so there are very many of them, sometimes even several from the same chain in one neighborhood. However, there is a growing restaurant scene with ethnic (mainly from Somalia and Ghana, Southeast Asia and Latin America) and high-priced offerings due to the progressive gentrification of the inner city.

security
The emergency number for the police / ambulance / fire brigade is 911.
Although it has declined somewhat in recent years, crime remains a problem in some parts of the city. Most violent crimes, however, occur in areas that are not visited by tourists. Be aware that theft of laptops, phones, and other items from cars is common. If unavoidable, keep valuables in the trunk and make sure it is locked.
Drunk driving is severely punished. The alcohol limit is 0.08. The police regularly set up checkpoints along the main roads to check driver's licenses and permits, and to look for drunk drivers.
Vehicles are legally obliged to give priority to pedestrians on pedestrian crossings. However, the law is not obeyed everywhere. Watch out for turning traffic when crossing streets.
Areas on the east side of the city along Livingston Avenue, Main Street, and Mount Vernon between Parsons and Alum Creek should be avoided at night. This also applies to Cleveland Avenue between I-670 and SR-161 and the area east of High Street near the OSU campus. On the west side of the city, a couple of neighborhoods around Broad St. and east of I-270 South are relatively safe during the day but not at night. In general, areas outside the I-270 loop (the Outerbelt) are safer and more peaceful than areas inside, although the area around Brice Road and I-70 is not safe. Safe areas within I-270 include the Arena District, Short North District, Clintonville, Northwest Columbus, Upper Arlington, Grandview Heights, Worthington, Dublin, much of German Village, and Bexley.
The Columbus area is home to a variety of law enforcement agencies, including Ohio State Patrol, Columbus Police, Franklin County Sheriff, and local police departments in Dublin, Westerville, and other local parishes. Usually they are professional, polite, and helpful. They are well trained and paid. Those who are polite and respectful will have few problems with them. Most police officers have cameras in their cars and do not take bribes. You have to be aware that you are likely to be recorded on video
