Colón is a city in Panama, it is the capital of the province of the same name and is located on the Atlantic coast.

background

The city of Colón was founded in 1850 when the construction of the Panama Canal Railway began. This railway line extends over a length of 76.7 km across the Isthmus of Panama from Colón to Panama City. Around 1900 the population of the city was around 3,000. By building the Panama Canal however, it rose rapidly. In 1931 there were already 31,000 inhabitants. Today around a quarter of a million people live in Colón, but by no means all of them are on a wage. Due to the social grievances, property and violent crimes are the order of the day, especially in the area around the free port, where people from all over Latin America have settled. For safety reasons, tourists should only move around the city in groups. It is also advisable to take part in organized tours.
