The Costa Verde was an area of great importance in Brazil's colonial history, and today many of the cities have a well-preserved historic center. This, combined with the beautiful mountains and beaches, over 365 islands of the twin bays, attracts a large number of tourists: both weekend residents and travelers from all over the Brazil and beyond.
Geographical notes
It borders to the north with the Valleys of Rio and with the Mesoregion of Vale do Paraíba Paulista of the state of St. Paul and to the east with theRio de Janeiro metropolitan area.

- Angra dos Reis - Coastal city and main starting point for visits to theIlha Grande.
- Itaguaí - Booming city with popular beaches.
- Mambucaba - Small village that still retains much of its colonial architecture.

- Paraty - The southernmost of the municipalities of the State of Rio de Janeiro.
