Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area in Belize District in Belize

This sanctuary is located in the small village of Crooked Tree (approx. 1000 inhabitants), which is one of the oldest localities in Belize with a founding date around 1700. The name Crooked Tree is derived from the Cashew tree.
In 1984 this sanctuary was created by the Belize Audubon Society [1] brought to life. Since then, a large area of marshland has been protected around the Crooked Tree Lagoon, where numerous birds (approx. 300 different species) feel at home. Especially in the dry season you can watch thousands of birds here, e.g. also the Jabiru.

By car the Northern Highway from Belize City in the direction Orange Walk then follow the signs for the Crooked Tree.
There are also some buses that leave from Belize City directly to Crooked Tree, or you have the option to get off at Crooked Tree and walk the last few kilometers.

Of course, the birds are in the foreground in all activities, but the nature reserve offers nature lovers the opportunity to vary:
- Visitor center. Offers a lot of information about the wildlife to be found here for 8 Bz $. Here you can quickly find a guide for the tour.
- Signposted hiking and observation trails. In a picturesque setting.
- Observation tower. For those who don't like to lose track.
- Spanish Creek. With the Mayan ruin Chau Hix.
- Black Creek. With crocodiles, howler monkeys and turtles.
